Ticket Scams
Only buy via FIFA Official Resale at FIFA.com/tickets. This is the only legitimate marketplace for World Cup tickets. Period.
- Tickets are digital-only via the FIFA app — if someone offers you paper tickets, they're fake.
- Screenshots of tickets are always fake. Digital tickets require app verification at the gate.
- If a price is below face value on the street, it's either stolen or fake.
- Major red flag: A seller won't meet you at BC Place to verify the ticket works.
- If you bought a ticket and it doesn't appear in your FIFA app 24 hours later, file a dispute immediately.
Pro Tip: Verification
Before the match, log into the FIFA app and verify your tickets are showing. If they're not there, contact FIFA support immediately. Don't assume they'll appear on match day.
Accommodation Scams
Airbnb listings near BC Place can disappear after you pay. Here's how to stay safe:
- Never pay outside the Airbnb platform. If a host asks you to pay via Venmo, bank transfer, or WhatsApp, cancel immediately.
- Verify the host has reviews from before 2025. Newer hosts are higher risk.
- Beware of listings added in the last 6 months near BC Place — these have higher scam rates.
- Always book refundable rates, not non-refundable. Schedules can change and you'll want flexibility.
- If a price seems too good to be true ($80 for a private room in Yaletown), it probably is.
What to Do If Scammed
If you pay for Airbnb and the listing cancels or you arrive and it's not as described, report it immediately to Airbnb and your credit card company. Airbnb's resolution team is responsive for scam cases.
Taxi & Rideshare Scams
- Only use metered taxis or Uber/Lyft app. Never accept informal rides from touts outside BC Place.
- On match days, expect Uber surge pricing of 3-5x normal rates. It's normal, not a scam.
- Best move: Take SkyTrain. Always cheaper, always faster, and no surge pricing.
- If you use a taxi, ask for the meter to be on before you enter. If the driver refuses, get another taxi.
The One Neighbourhood to Be Careful In
East Hastings Street (DTES) — be aware, not afraid.
- Don't walk east of Main Street after midnight. It's a known area for unsupervised activity.
- Completely safe during daylight and match hours.
- BC Place itself, Yaletown, Gastown, and Downtown are very safe and well-patrolled on match days.
- Tell your family: 99% of Vancouver is extremely safe. Just avoid that one strip at night.
Emergency Numbers
- Emergency (Police/Fire/Medical): 911
- Non-emergency police: 604-717-3321
- Vancouver Coastal Health (Medical): 811
- Lost or stolen passport: Contact your country's embassy immediately
Overall Safety Reality
Vancouver is one of the safest cities in North America. The above are edge cases, not the norm. Use common sense, avoid the DTES at night, and you'll have an amazing, safe trip.
